Dyeing black: avoiding smut and patchiness

Black anodized parts occasionally show smut and patchy colour after dyeing.

Our current sequence is anodize → rinse → dye → rinse → seal. Possible causes include poor rinsing, dye pH, bath contamination and part orientation.

What checks do you use before dyeing, and how do you recover a bath that has started to produce patchy results?

  • Dye concentration and pH
  • Rinse water quality
  • Part movement and racking
  • Filtration and contamination control
